Bookham to launch next-generation color wheel for projection displays at FID 2004
Bookham, Inc. ("Bookham") (NASDAQ: BKHM), a leading provider of optical components, modules and subsystems, is launching the ColorLoc family of Color Wheels and optics at the Flat Information Display (FID) Conference 2004, San Francisco, California.
ColorLoc filter wheels and optical components are key components of projection display systems and are currently going through customer qualification. They offer manufacturers of projection display systems significantly improved performance and economics compared to currently available technology.
ColorLoc color wheels feature improved color control and higher transmittance giving greater light output, and hence brighter displays. Tighter thin film tolerances in ColorLoc also reduce light-engine (LE) tuning times, lowering total manufacturing cost for these projection displays. The result is better color purity closer to primary colors, less color saturation, and a brighter and purer color display.
ColorLoc filter wheels are manufactured using Bookham's proprietary Advanced Energetic Deposition (AED) process and custom automated assembly systems. Projection system manufacturers gain from lower costs, consistency of supply and product repeatability, and reliable and consistent filter characteristics.
Color wheels can be used with the Texas Instruments Digital Light Processor (DLP). The color wheel typically separates white light from the source lamp into red, blue, and green primary colors. Newer applications may have four or more colors. This combination of color wheel, white light and DLP is used for both rear-projection televisions (RPTVs) and front projectors.
The AED thin film deposition technology used in ColorLoc color wheels, IR/UV trimmer filters and color filters is based on many hundreds of man–years of research, development and manufacturing in thin film filters. This technology produces precision optical filters with negligible defects and with higher throughput, tighter wavelength control, and lower cost than competing technologies. AED has enabled Bookham to have a leading market share position for telecommunications wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) filters.
