Nordisk Mobiltelefon and Nortel Networks Show-Off CDMA 450 in Tampere

Nordisk Mobiltelefon and Nortel Networks are presenting a live demonstration of the broadband mobile technology CDMA 450 in Tampere, Finland. The trial system, implemented with Digita Oy, the Finnish TV and radio mast operator, brings the prospect of improved geographical reach for advanced mobile services in Nordic countries at data rates up to 2.45 megabits per second.

CDMA 450 is a standard for use in countries transitioning to digital wireless service from Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) 450 analogue service and in countries advocating universal access to voice and data. Because of the lower radio spectrum, CDMA 450 has the advantage of covering a significantly larger geographical footprint compared to traditional cellular systems. This means fewer cell sites, lower capital expenditures and no need for licensed operators to acquire additional spectrum. CDMA 450 makes it possible to provide mobile telephony and broadband service without high infrastructure costs.

CDMA 450 systems offer basic speech and data transfer services, as well as SMS, MMS, e-mail, WAP and Web browsing. But CDMA 450 can provide greater geographical coverage from less base stations because it operates in the lower 450 megahertz (MHz) radio frequency.

Nortel Networks CDMA 450 product portfolio is designed to help customers reduce network capital expenditures and operating costs while maximizing existing network investments. The CDMA 450 products, built on Nortel Networks Metro Cell base station solution, are designed to be the most flexible available in the industry today. Available in both indoor and outdoor platforms, Nortel Networks CDMA BTS supports CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO simultaneously. Nortel Networks 450 radio technology increases power efficiency, which reduces consumption by up to 25 percent.
