New Panasonic KV-S3065CL and KV-S3065CW Color Scanners
KV-S3065CL and KV-S3065CW Are Fast, Flexible and Versatile; Combine Functionality and Advanced Color Features While Scanning up to 65 ppm in Color, Monochrome and Gray
Panasonic's duplex KV-S3065CL and KV-S3065CW color scanners are among the fastest overall in the low-volume production, color sheet fed scanner segment (up to 120 ipm - duplex, 200 dpi letter), and are packed with features usually found only in high-end scanners. According to Susan Moyse, an industry consultant with InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, the new series may have significant impact on the document scanning market.
"Panasonic's new scanners are loaded with an impressive array of performance features, yet are priced so competitively that they are likely to force competitors to follow suit," says Moyse. Panasonic's KV-S3065CL/CW series, in Moyse's estimation, should help breathe new life into the low-volume production segment of the document scanning market. "This segment," Moyse says, "has been sluggish due to a limited selection of predominantly older high-priced products."
One way in which the new Panasonic series "breathes new life" into its segment is by incorporating features typically found in higher-end scanners, such as automatic binary/color distinction, blank page removal, selectable reference and multi-color dropout.
Automatic binary/color distinction technology automatically distinguishes color pages from black & white. This intelligent feature reduces scan-to-file size for more efficient scanning. Blank page removal eliminates scanning in and storing unnecessary blank pages.
With selectable reference, accurate automatic color cropping and de-skewing has never been easier. By flicking a lever, the KV-S3065C series easily switches to black or white reference to accommodate varying software and driver requirements without the need to replace rollers.
Additionally, traditional de-skew software may produce jagged edges, but Panasonic's smoothing function makes character edges remain smooth and precise even after de-skew. The automatic color cropping feature eliminates the need to adjust page size.
With multi-color dropout, users aren't limited to dropping out generic red, green and blue. Panasonic technology allows the user to select up to three distinct ranges of different colors to be dropped out. This is a major feature for businesses that deal with forms processing and may have identical forms printed by multiple vendors, each using their own ink formulation.
Both scanners come with Panasonic's new hybrid contact imaging sensor technology, which incorporates a three-line CCD image sensor and dual fluorescent white lamps. Blending the best of both technologies in one state of the art device results in better focus and greater depth of field, and substantially enhances image quality during the scanning process.
According to Ralph Gammon, editor of Document Imaging Report, the innovative camera design in the new series has enabled Panasonic to introduce powerful color capabilities into a proven transport.
"The KV-S3065CL/CW series combines the body of Panasonic's KV-S2065 series with the fastest rated color speeds in the low-volume production segment," says Gammon. "The optional pre-scan imprinter could also be a differentiating feature in certain applications."
The user-friendly KV-S3065CL/CW series also features replaceable upper and lower lens covers that are easily changed in minutes. Since lens covers are vulnerable to being scratched by stapled documents, this can translate into a significant saving in cost and downtime over traditional lens covers that are more difficult and far more costly to replace.
Along with a 300-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), the KV-S3065CL and KV-S3065CW have a 10,000-page maximum daily duty cycle that is uncommon in their segment.
These types of features make the scanners an excellent choice for a number of production applications in industry segments that include healthcare, law, engineering, banking, transportation, government and law enforcement, as well as horizontal applications such as human resources and finance. With its broad range of capabilities, the KV-S3065CL/CW series can enable users to meet today's stringent compliance requirements.
For example, with the optional pre- and/or post-scan imprinter solution, characters can be printed on the front surface of a scanned document (pre-scan imprint), making it suitable for use in court. This feature is used heavily in government, law enforcement and other litigious environments that require the document to be endorsed, allowing scanned documents to be used as legal documents. The post-scan imprinter prints characters on back surfaces, making it easy to recognize scanned documents.
Cutting and pasting oversized documents is a thing of the past, because these new scanners feature long-paper mode with a capacity up to 183.4 feet. Both models are well suited for archiving long-paper data files, from EKGs to oil logs. And with the straight path mode, the scanners can handle plastic ID cards, essential in healthcare and homeland security environments.
The difference between these two workhorses is paper-handling capability. Business card to legal-sized black & white and color originals can be scanned with the KV-S3065CL; the KV-S3065CW scans up to ledger-sized paper.
High-yield, easy-to-use consumables also enhance the user experience by helping eliminate the frustration and downtime of waiting for a service technician. And with the scanners' clamshell design, users can replace the rollers quickly and easily without special tools.
Panasonic's space-saving design offers a much smaller footprint -- as much as 88% smaller -- than scanners in its class that feature a winged tray configuration.
Both models incorporate ultrasonic double-feed detection -- ultrasonic sensors detect air between two sheets of paper, stop the feed and alert the user -- for "no-miss" scanning. Other enhancements include USB 2.0 & Ultra SCSI connectivity and enhanced functionality supported via ISIS and TWAIN drive.
The KV-S3065CL and KV-S3065CW feature Panasonic's trusted Image Enhancement (PIE) technology, which improves a number of document characteristics by combining automatic color/binary distinction and blank page removal, and keeping user intervention to a minimum. With this technology, the quality of scanned images can be improved beyond that of the original. The end result is the highest quality scanned images in the smallest file space.
The MultiStream(TM) function produces both color and monochrome output in a single scan. MultiStream provides flexible usage and enhanced productivity, i.e., monochrome image for OCR and color image for archiving and monitor check.
Other features include:
-- Reliable Throughput Image Viewer (RTIV(TM)) image-capture utility included
-- 600 dpi optical resolution, 100-600 dpi one-step increment
-- ISIS(R)-certified and TWAIN-compliant drivers
-- Kofax(R) certified (pending)
-- Energy Star(R) compliant
Continuing its tradition of providing a standard service program that minimizes downtime, Panasonic's KV-S3065CL/CW series comes with a one-year Express Exchange Warranty that may eliminate the need for onsite service and increase productivity.
The KV-S3065CL and KV-S3065CW carry MSRPs(1) of $5,995.00 and $6,995.00, respectively.
Panasonic offers a full line of color scanners that support a variety of application environments. The company has a solid working relationship with a number of service providers and software developers, many of whom use color scanners in their applications. Panasonic is the brand of choice for many of these providers, who rely on the dependability of these scanners in meeting their clients' requirements.
